Joint Steering Committee Discusses Additional Electricity Import from India to Bangladesh

The 13th Joint Steering Committee Meeting between Bangladesh and India, held on 27-28 September 2017, reviewed Bangladesh-India power sector cooperation, and explored new areas and opportunities, including:

  • The Rampal solar power project;
  • Possible 840 megawatt (MW) additional electricity import from India to Bangladesh, with 340 MW from Tripura and 500 MW from West Bengal;
  • Bheramara interconnection substation capacity building;
  • Bangladesh proposal to import power from Nepal;
  • Bangladesh-Bhutan-India joint investment in the 1,125 MW Kuri-2 hydropower project in Bhutan; and
  • Private sector investment in the power sector of both countries.

The Meeting was led by Mr. Ahmad Kaikaus, Power Secretary, Bangladesh, and Mr. Ajoy Kumar Bhalla, Power Secretary, India.
