First Funding Tranche Released for New India-Bangladesh Waterway Link

29 December 2015

The Government of India has released the first tranche of funding worth around $299,000 to construct a new waterway link between its northeast region (NER) and Bangladesh. With total allocation of $1.87 million, the project will link the Gomati and Howrah rivers in Tripura with the Meghna river in Bangladesh, to boost bilateral trade and increase the movement of people, goods, and machinery.

India is keen on strengthening multimodal connectivity in the NER, in line with its 'Act East' policy, to establish ties with its ASEAN and East Asian neighbors.

Four inland water routes between Bangladesh and India have been in operation since 1972, and are periodically renewed under the Bangladesh-India Protocol on Inland Water Transit and Trade.
