Bhutan’s Druk Green Power and India's Adani Group Sign Wangchhu Hydropower Project MoU

30 August 2024

The Druk Green Power Corporation (DGPC) of Bhutan and the Adani Group of India have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the construction of the Wangchhu Hydropower Project. The project has two potential configurations: a 570MW run-of-the-river scheme or a 900MW reservoir scheme. Both options are under consideration, with detailed project reports already available. The two parties will collaborate over the next three to five months to finalize project parameters, discuss technical and cost aspects, and decide on implementation modalities, including the possibility of a joint venture.

This agreement marks a significant step in the ongoing cooperation between Bhutan and India in the energy sector. Mr. Gautam Adani, Chairman of the Adani Group, expressed enthusiasm for the project on social media, praising Bhutan's leadership for their vision and infrastructure initiatives. The Government of Bhutan plans to continue working closely with India on hydropower and solar energy projects. Additionally, DGPC is reportedly in discussions with the Tata Group for another hydropower project, the 600MW Kholongchhu, further highlighting the strengthening energy partnerships between the two countries.
