Nepal Hydropower Export to India Reaches $72.2 Million

19 October 2023

Nepal's hydropower export earnings continue to grow. From mid-July to mid-October 2023, Nepal’s electricity export to India reached NPR9.64 billion (approximately $72.2 million). Electricity export has helped reduce Nepal’s trade deficit with India and increased the country’s foreign exchange reserves, according to the Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA).

Mr. Prabal Adhikari, director of power trade, NEA, said, "Growing power export from Nepal is important not only to boost our financial status but also to power the clean energy transition in the neighboring country."

Mr. Adhikari said India has committed to purchase 10,000 megawatts of power in the next 10 years. India has also agreed to facilitate the export of 40 megawatts of electricity from Nepal to Bangladesh.
