Bangladesh Railways to Install Elephant Warning System along New Rail Tracks

1 July 2023

Bangladesh Railways plans to install an elephant warning system along its new rail tracks. The system will use a seismic based sensor system to monitor the movement of elephants in the vicinity and trigger an alert. The alert can serve as an early warning measure for slowing or stopping the trains along the new Dohazari-Cox’s Bazar Railway route in Bangladesh. The route passes through three forests that are the habitat of elephants. The railway project is being funded by the Asian Development Bank under the South Asia Subregional Economic Cooperation (SASEC) Program.

Bangladesh is considering the mechanism by the Central Scientific Instruments Organization (CSIO) based in India. The CSIO had earlier installed the “Intelligent Elephant Movement Detection and Alert System” along a railway track passing through the Rajaji National Park in Uttarakhand to warn locomotive pilots about the presence of elephants to prevent accidents.
