Pasakha Mega Dry Port Construction On Track

15 May 2023

Construction of the mega dry port at Pasakha, Phuentsholing, is on track, amid challenges faced during the COVID-19 pandemic. Work on the dry port began in 2020 and has achieved almost 45% completion. Mr. Ugyen Wangchuk, project manager of the Department of Trade of the Government of Bhutan, noted that with the current progress, the project can be completed on time.

The aim is to complete the dry port by mid-2026.

The four phases of construction of the dry port are (i) construction of boundary walls; (ii) construction of an approach road linking the highway and the project site; (iii) refilling the project area; and (iv) construction of infrastructure, including warehouses and administration buildings. The first two phases have been completed and the third phase is ongoing.

The mega dry port is being constructed with an estimated budget of Nu 1.2bn (around $14.49 million), financed with support from the Government of India under the trade support facility program.

The project is expected to address challenges in Bhutan’s trade logistics, such as processing of import and export, transshipment of cargo, long transit times, and high freight costs for movement of goods across the border.
