Road Project to Connect SASEC Corridors with Bhutan and Bangladesh

6 December 2022

State highways in Assam, India, are set to be upgraded through a loan approved by the Asian Development Bank (ADB) on 6 December 2022. The $300 million loan from the ADB will upgrade more than 300 kilometers of state highways as well as district roads in Assam. This will include six road segments in western, central, and southern regions of Assam.

The project will connect corridors of the South Asia Subregional Economic Cooperation (SASEC) partnership with Bhutan's and Bangladesh's borders. It is expected to improve transport and increase the volume of trade across borders.

The project will double the number of lanes on state highways and major roads. It will improve resilience against disasters and climate change by building elevated highways in flood-prone areas and incorporating landslide control measures into the infrastructure. Infrastructure and facilities for pedestrians and public transportation will also be built.
