SASEC Projects in Bangladesh to Facilitate Access to Sea Ports for Landlocked Nepal and Bhutan
19 September 2022
Bangladesh has implemented at least five projects under the SASEC program that will help landlocked Bhutan and Nepal gain access to sea ports. These projects are financed through the Asian Development Bank (ADB).
The SASEC projects include a road connectivity project to expand the 110-kilometer (km) Rangpur-Teesta-Burimari highway from two lanes to four lanes and a road connectivity project to expand the 120-km Rangpur-Banglabandha highway from two lanes to four lanes. ADB is also financing a corridor from Joydevpur to Tangail to facilitate the transport of cargo from Nepal and Bhutan to Bangladesh seaports in Chattogram and Khulna.
Bangladesh's major exports to Nepal include garments, jute products, oil cake, potato, food products, electrical and electronic goods, furniture, batteries, and pharmaceuticals.
