The Ministry of External Affairs of the Government of India is reviewing feasibility studies for five potential railway linkages between India and Bhutan. Conducted by the Northeast Frontier Railway, the studies include the following potential routes:

• Kokhrajhar (Assam, India) to Gelephu (Bhutan), with total distance of 57 kilometers (km);
• Pathsala (Assam) to Nanglam (Bhutan), with total distance of 51 km;
• Rangjya (Assam) to Samdrupjongkjar (Bhutan), with total distance of 48 km;
• Banarhat (West Bengal, India) to Samtse (Bhutan), with total distance of 23 km; and
• Hasimara (West Bengal) to Phuentsholing (Bhutan), with total distance of 18 km.

The Indian Railways is undertaking ground work to expand rail connectivity toward Bhutan, Bangladesh, Myanmar, and Nepal, as part the Government's "Act East" Policy.
