Bangladesh and Sri Lanka to Develop a Joint Tourism Initiative
6 November 2025
The Governments of Bangladesh and Sri Lanka are developing a joint tourism initiative to strengthen cooperation in the travel sector, building on discussions held during foreign office consultations in Colombo, Sri Lanka, on 6 November 2025. They also plan to collaborate on green tourism and create joint circuits focused on tea and Buddhist heritage. Efforts are also underway to finalize a memorandum of understanding on tourism cooperation. In 2024, Sri Lanka welcomed over two million international tourists, while Bangladesh only received 600,000 to 700,000 annually, despite attractions like Cox's Bazar and the Sundarbans.
Both nations also discussed enhancing maritime connectivity through potential port links between Chattogram and Colombo to support trade. Sri Lanka encouraged Bangladesh’s investment in infrastructure, logistics, agriculture, and tourism, while Bangladesh invited Sri Lankan investors to explore its export processing zones, special economic zones, and Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (APIs) industrial parks. The two countries also identified opportunities for expanded cooperation in ICT, renewable energy, banking, and financial services to strengthen overall bilateral economic relations.
