India to Extend India-Sri Lanka Ferry Service Subsidy for One Year

14 June 2025

The Government of India will extend its subsidy for the ferry service between Nagapattinam (India) and Kankesanthurai (Sri Lanka) for one more year, to further promote regional connectivity and foster stronger ties between the two countries. The subsidy, amounting to 25 million rupees (around $288,000) monthly—totaling 300 million rupees (around $3.46 million) for the year—will help cover crucial logistical and operational costs, and will ensure the service remains affordable and sustainable. Launched in August 2024, the ferry has transported over 15,000 passengers between India and Sri Lanka.

According to India’s High Commission in Colombo, maintaining this ferry service is a vital milestone in enhancing both transportation infrastructure and people-to-people connections in the region. India plans to explore additional routes and services that could further deepen connectivity and economic cooperation between the two nations.
