Reliance Power and Bhutan Forge Landmark Solar Energy Partnership

19 May 2025

Reliance Power of India has signed a major agreement with Green Digital Private Limited, a Bhutan government-owned entity, to develop Bhutan’s largest solar energy project. The initiative, valued at Rs 2,000 crore (around $234 million), will generate 500 MW of electricity.

Structured as a 50:50 joint venture with Druk Holding and Investments (DHI), Bhutan’s main investment arm, the project demonstrates a deepening commitment to renewable energy collaboration in South Asia and further strengthens the economic partnership between India and Bhutan.

The generated electricity will be sold under a long-term agreement with Green Digital, with the potential for Bhutan to export surplus clean energy to neighboring countries, including India. This project builds on a broader strategic alliance, following an October 2024 partnership between Reliance Enterprises and DHI for the 770 MW Chamkharchhu-I hydropower project. Together, these solar and hydro initiatives mark a significant step forward for regional energy cooperation, supporting Bhutan’s sustainable development goals and advancing South Asia’s transition to clean, cross-border power solutions.
