India and Maldives sign 13 MoUs to Enhance Ferry Services
18 May 2025

India and Maldives signed 13 new Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) aimed at enhancing ferry services across the island nation. Backed by a grant of MVR 100 million (approximately $6.6 million) under the third phase of the High Impact Community Development Project (HICDP), these agreements aim to improve maritime connectivity, transport infrastructure, and community livelihoods in Maldives.
The MoUs were formalized in Malé on 18 May 2025. Mr. Abdulla Khaleel, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Government of Maldives, and Mr. G Balasubramanian, Indian High Commissioner to Maldives, signed the agreements on behalf of their respective governments. Mr. Mohamed Ameen, Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation of the Government of Maldives, signed as the representative of the implementing agency.
This latest collaboration builds on India’s ongoing support for the Maldives’ infrastructure and social development, particularly in the vital area of inter-island transport. As Maldives pursues an ambitious goal to complete a national ferry network by the end of 2025, the new projects are set to deliver tangible benefits to remote communities, strengthen bilateral relations, and promote socio-economic progress throughout the archipelago.
