India, Nepal Energy Ministers Jointly Visit Arun III Hydropower Project

Mr. Deepak Khadka, Minister for Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation of the Government of Nepal, and Mr. Manohar Lal Khattar, Minister for Power, Housing and Urban Affairs of the Government of India, jointly inspected the ongoing Arun III Hydropower Project in Sankhuwasabha, Nepal. The ministers discussed project progress and challenges, reaffirming the importance of its timely completion for mutual benefit. 

The ministers toured the power house and dam of the project site, inaugurated ‘Unit-2’ of the project, and participated in a tree-planting activity. Minister Khadka expressed gratitude for India’s continued investment and support, highlighting the high priority placed on completing this 900-megawatt venture.  

Minister Khattar recognized Nepal’s vast hydropower potential and voiced India’s readiness to further invest in Nepal’s energy sector, emphasizing regional prosperity through energy cooperation.  

The Arun III project, which commenced in 2018, represents a major bilateral collaboration. It has a projected cost of Rs 104 billion (around $1.22 billion). The project is being developed by the Sutlej Hydropower Company of India. It is one of the largest hydropower projects under Indian investment in Nepal.
