Bangladesh-India-Nepal Power-Sharing Agreement Comes into Effect

16 November 2024

A power-sharing agreement among Bangladesh, India, and Nepal came into effect on 15 November 2024. Nepal exported 40 megawatts (MW) of electricity to Bangladesh, marking the formal opening of the Nepal-Bangladesh energy trade. Electricity trade passed through the electricity grid along the Siliguri Corridor in West, Bengal, India.

The power trade was officially inaugurated by Mr. Dipak Khadka, Nepal Energy Minister, Mr. Manohar Lal, India’s Union Minister for Power and Housing and Urban Affairs, and Mr. Fouzul Kabir Khan, adviser, Bangladesh Ministry of Power, Energy and Mineral Resources, through a virtual event hosted in Kathmandu.

The trade follows the 3 October 2024 signing of the Tripartite Power Sales Agreement between Dhaka, Bangladesh, and Kathmandu, Nepal, authorizing the export of electricity every year from 15 June to 15 November for five years.
