ADB Approves SASEC Electricity Infrastructure Project in Nepal

The Asian Development Bank (ADB) approved a loan for the South Asia Subregional Economic Cooperation (SASEC) Electricity Transmission and Distribution Strengthening Project in Nepal. The ADB assistance, worth $311 million, was approved on 4 November 2024 and aims to improve and modernize electricity and distribution infrastructure in Nepal.

The project will support the construction of of 290 kilometers (km) of power transmission lines from Dailekh to Jumla, New Butwal to Lamahi, Nijgadh to Ramauli, and Teenpiple and Okharpauwa. The project will also rehabilitate and expand electricity distribution infrastructure in the provinces of Kamali and Lumbini and build solar photovoltaic generation facilities in Kamali.

In addition, a $30-million grant will help provide the Nepal Electricity Authority with advanced communication tools and technology.

According to Mr. Jiwan Acharya, principal energy specialist, ADB, "Upgrading and modernizing Nepal's electricity transmission and distribution facilities and infrastructure is essential to its sustainable growth and development."
