India-Sri Lanka Ferry Service Resumes

17 August 2024

The passenger ferry service between India and Sri Lanka resumed operations on 16 August 2024, marking a significant milestone in strengthening bilateral relations and maritime connectivity. The Sivagangai ferry successfully completed its inaugural journey between Nagapattinam in Tamil Nadu, India, and Kankesanthurai, in Jaffna, Sri Lanka, covering approximately 60 nautical miles in about 3.5 hours. This resumption comes after several months of delays and technical issues, following an initial relaunch attempt in October 2023, which itself came after a 41-year hiatus. The Indian High Commission emphasized the importance of this service in fostering people-to-people connections and boosting economic collaboration between the two nations.

In support of this initiative, India has extended grant assistance of over $63 million to Sri Lanka for upgrading the Kankesanthurai harbor. This development enhances connectivity between India and Sri Lanka and provides a convenient and affordable travel option for people on both sides of the strait.
