Bangladesh Ready for Cargo Movement with India’s Northeastern Region via Chattogram Port

12 April 2023

Mr. Khalid Mahmud Chowdhury, Minister of State for Shipping of the Government of Bangladesh, stated that transit and transshipment of cargo between Bangladesh and India’s northeastern region via Chattogram (Chittagong) port will start soon. Underscoring Bangladesh’s readiness, Mr. Chowdhury emphasized that trial runs have been completed and arrangements for immigration and customs formalities on the Bangladesh side have been prepared. The Statutory Regulatory Order, required for the movement of cargo from Bangladesh to India, will be issued by the country’s National Board of Revenue.

On the Indian side, the immigration office is almost complete. Mr. Manik Saha, Chief Minister of Tripura, recently inspected the site at Sabroom. The 1.9-km-long Maitree Setu (“friendship bridge") over the river Feni, connects Sabroom with Bangladesh. This will facilitate movement of passengers and goods from Chattogram Port. The bridge also links Bangladesh with Bhutan and Nepal, providing a gateway for trade. In addition, a deep seaport is being developed by the Government of Japan at Matarbari in Cox’s Bazar near Chattogram Port. This is set to be completed by 2027.
