India: Strengthening Multimodal and Integrated Logistics Ecosystem Program (Subprogram 1)

The Strengthening Multimodal and Integrated Logistics Ecosystem (SMILE) program is a programmatic policy-based loan (PBL) to support the government in undertaking wide ranging reforms in the logistics sector in India. The program aims to strengthen the institutional and policy framework for inter-ministerial coordination and planning to incentivize private sector participation in multimodal logistics projects (MMLPs), improving efficiencies in external trade logistics, and encouraging the use of smart and automated systems for improved service delivery.

KEY OUTPUTS

Support for reforms and strengthening of the institutional framework to transform the logistics sector. Policy actions undertaken in the four reform areas will facilitate private investment in logistics facilities. The four reform areas are listed below

  • Strengthening of the policy and institutional framework for integrated development of the logistics sector;
  • Strengthening and standardization of processes to facilitate private investment and improve operational efficiency;
  • External trade logistics and movement of domestic cargo through coastal shipping and inland waterways improved for the enhanced competitiveness of domestic industry; and
  • Implementation of smart systems for safe, efficient, and lower-emission logistics.
