India to Begin Operating Myanmar's Sittwe Port

8 January 2019

Mr. Mansukh L. Mandaviya, Minister of State for Shipping, Road Transport and Chemical and Fertilizer, Government of India, informed the Rajya Sabha (Council of States) that the Sittwe Port in Myanmar is ready to operate. Constructed with assistance from the Government of India, the Sittwe Port is part of the Kaladan Multi Modal Transit Transport Project. India will take over the operations of Sittwe Port, as agreed in the bilateral memorandum of understanding signed by the Governments of India and Myanmar on 22 October 2018 for operationalization of the Port at Sittwe and Inland Water Transport Terminals at Sittwe and Paletwa.

The Kaladan Multi-Modal Transit Transport Project aims to create a multimodal sea, river, and road transport corridor for shipment of cargo from the eastern ports of India to Myanmar, as well as to India's northeastern region via Myanmar. Mr. Mandaviya highlighted that once fully operational, the project would encourage investment and trade. It will also open up alternate routes for connectivity to India's northeastern region.
