Bangladesh-India Business Meeting Emphasizes Bilateral Trade Potential

4 October 2017

A Bangladesh-India Business Meeting was held on the occasion of India Finance Minister Arun Jaitley’s visit to Bangladesh on 4 October 2017, organized by the Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry. The meeting emphasized the immense prospects for bilateral investment and growth between Bangladesh and India, and noted:

  • Growth potential of Bangladesh sectors, including agriculture, pharmaceuticals, tourism, health, education, and research;
  • Surge in volume of bilateral trade, and the need to balance the trade deficit. Mr. Tofail Ahmed, Commerce Minister, Bangladesh, urged India to take steps to reduce the trade deficit through initiatives including removal of non-tariff and para-tariff barriers that set back Bangladeshi goods’ export; improvement in facilities, mutual recognition of certificates and standards, and better connectivity; and
  • Potential for joint cooperation through Bangladesh’s two special economic zones near the Indian border.

The meeting was attended by government officials and private sector representatives from the two countries, including members of the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry, who accompanied Mr. Jaitley on his trip.
