India-Bangladesh Revives International River Trade from Dibrugarh, Assam

5 October 2026

India has revived international river trade from Dibrugarh, Assam, India, sending 54 metric tonnes of methanol to Bangladesh in October 2026. The shipment was produced by Assam Petro-Chemicals Ltd in Namrup and was transported aboard a barge headed for Pangaon Port in Dhaka, Bangladesh.

The voyage was the first river export from Assam to an international port in 70 years. It will help gauge the Brahmaputra River’s potential as a commercial freight corridor connecting India's northeast region with South Asian markets. The opening of the route is projected to strengthen regional connectivity and the economy.

The cargo will travel a total of 1,300 kilometers along National Waterway-2 and the India-Bangladesh Protocol Route to Narayanganj in Dhaka, Bangladesh.
