Bhutan has begun construction of its temple complex in Lumbini, Nepal, on 28 June 2026, marking a major step in cultural, religious, and diplomatic cooperation between the two neighbors. The project, supported by the Government of Nepal and implemented by Bhutan’s Department of Culture and Dzongkha Development under the Ministry of Home Affairs, reflects shared efforts to strengthen Buddhist heritage, pilgrimage tourism, and people-to-people exchanges. 

The new Bhutan Temple Complex will add to Lumbini’s role as a global Buddhist destination while showcasing Bhutan’s traditional architecture and spiritual heritage.  

During the groundbreaking ceremony, Bhutanese and Nepali officials also discussed future cooperation, including direct air connectivity, tourism links, and regional pilgrimage routes connecting Paro, Lumbini, and Bodhgaya. 

Construction of the temple complex is funded by the Royal Government of Bhutan at an estimated cost of Nu. 160 million (~US$1.69 million).  

The signing of the land lease agreement between Bhutan and the Lumbini Development Trust was held in June 2025, followed by preparatory work. Construction is estimated to take about two years, with target completion for 2028.
