Bangladesh and Maldives Explore Direct Maritime Links
26 July 2026
Bangladesh and Maldives are exploring a direct shipping link to strengthen maritime connectivity and further deepen bilateral trade. The proposal was discussed during a bilateral meeting in Malé between Mr. Khalilur Rahman, Foreign Minister of the Government of Bangladesh, and Ms. Iruthisham Adam, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Government of Maldives. Both sides discussed ways to deepen cooperation across trade and connectivity.
The two countries also reviewed opportunities for expanded collaboration in migration and expatriate welfare, tourism, education, health, blue economy, and maritime connectivity. They noted that improved direct shipping could support the movement of goods and reinforce broader economic ties.
They also reaffirmed their commitment to stronger people-to-people links and considered possible high-level visits as part of efforts to advance cooperation further.
