India, Nepal Review Overall Railway Cooperation

The Governments of India and Nepal held the 10th Project Steering Committee (PSC) and the 8th Joint Working Group (JWG) meetings on 11-12 June 2026 in Kathmandu, Nepal. The  bilateral meetings were held to review the implementation of ongoing cross-border railway links and evaluate overall cooperation in the railway sector between the two nations.

The meetings 

  • Reviewed the progress of the Jaynagar-Bijalpura-Bardibas and Jogbani-Biratnagar broad-gauge railway lines, which are being developed with grant assistance from India.
  • Evaluated the preparedness for starting work on the remaining railway sections, with Nepal assuring facilitation for early commencement.
  • Discussed Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for launching passenger train services on the Janakpur-Ayodhya section.
  • Examined the Final Location Survey (FLS) Report for the Raxaul-Kathmandu Broad Gauge Railway Link.
  • Explored technical support for the East-West Railway Link and the potential for additional railway connections. 

Both nations agreed to maintain close engagement to further strengthen their collaboration in the railway sector. Moving forward, the focus will remain on securing the necessary facilitation from the Nepali side to ensure the swift commencement and successful completion of work on the remaining cross-border railway sections.
