Bangladesh and Bhutan Discuss Strengthening Cooperation in Energy and Trade

H.E. Karma Hamu Dorji, Bhutanese Ambassador to Bangladesh, paid a courtesy call to Bangladesh Commerce Minister Khandaker Abdul Muktadir on 28 April 2026 to discuss deepening bilateral ties. The meeting highlighted optimism on cooperation in renewable energy and trade.
The meeting discussions included the following:
- Discussions highlighted that South Asia is one of the least trade-integrated regions globally, with intra-regional trade making up only a small fraction of total trade.
- Mr. Muktadir proposed joint-venture hydroelectric projects leveraging Bhutan's hydropower potential, as well as expanded solar energy cooperation
- Ms. Dorji welcomed Mr. Muktadir's proposals on energy cooperation and expressed Bhutan's interest in enhancing collaboration in energy and trade. She also noted Bhutan's close proximity to Burimari land port, making bilateral trade logistically convenient and cost-effective
- Ms. Dorji noted the the longstanding people-to-people ties between the two countries and the increasing number of Bhutanese students pursuing medical studies in Bangladesh
- Both sides agreed that stronger cooperation would support sustainable economic growth and regional integration
