Bhutan, Sri Lanka Explore Closer Cooperation in the Aviation Sector

24 March 2026

The civil aviation authorities of Bhutan and Sri Lanka held a bilateral meeting on 24 March 2026 to explore closer cooperation in the aviation sector. The Bhutanese delegation, led by Director General Kinley Wangchuk, presented proposals to enhance international scheduled passenger operations between the two countries and discussed expanding aviation training opportunities in Sri Lanka for Bhutanese students.

Sri Lanka's Director General Capt. Daminda Rambukwella welcomed the proposals and requested Bhutan to submit a formal proposal toward establishing an Air Services Agreement between the two nations. Both sides agreed that any amendments or final decisions would be made in consultation with their respective line ministries, including the Ministries of Ports, Civil Aviation, and Foreign Affairs. The meeting also acknowledged the broader challenges facing global aviation, particularly the decline in air travel due to conflict, while noting the sector's gradual recovery.
