High-level Visit of Prime Minister of Bhutan Deepens Economic Partnership with Bangladesh

Bhutan Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay's state visit to Bangladesh on 22–24 November 2025, hosted by Bangladesh Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus, laid the groundwork for expanded cooperation in several sectors.
During his state visit, Prime Minister Tobgay met with senior government officials and private sector representatives to discuss cooperation in trade, subregional energy, transport, tourism, education, health and investment.
Their meeting emphasized the practical benefits of closer ties and yielded the following key commitments and initiatives:
- An MoU on trade of international internet bandwidth and other telecommunications services, to improve Bhutan's digital connectivity;
- An MoU on health worker appointments from Bangladesh to meet shortages in Bhutan;
- Agreement to begin formal negotiations on a Free Trade Agreement, building on the 2020 Preferential Trade Agreement between Bangladesh and Bhutan;
- Review of progress on the planned Special Economic Zone development of Bhutan in Kurigram, Bangladesh;
- Review of progress under the Agreement on the Movement of Traffic-in-Transit;
- A joint working group to strengthen tourism cooperation and two-way travel.
Bangladesh also offered to supply pharmaceutical products on a government-to-government basis to Bhutan to support access to affordable medical supplies, and expressed support for Bhutan’s Gelephu Mindfulness City vision. In addition, the two countries acknowledged their cooperation in education, with Bangladesh opening more seats for Bhutanese students in medicine and engineering.
