Hanimaadhoo International Airport Opens in Maldives

Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu inaugurated the Hanimaadhoo International Airport on 9 November, describing the facility as a "gateway to prosperity" for the country's northern region and a symbol of economic transformation. President Muizzu emphasized that the airport would serve as a catalyst for unlocking the potential of northern Maldives while driving growth in tourism, agriculture, fisheries, and the broader economy. He also highlighted the project, funded with India’s assistance, is a monument to the enduring strength of Maldives-India relations as both nations celebrate 60 years of diplomatic ties.
The airport project is financed through an $800 million line of credit from India's EXIM Bank under a 2019 agreement, with the development contract worth $136.6 million awarded to India's JMC Projects. The Indian High Commission in Maldives described the facility on the social media site X, as "a true vehicle for progress and prosperity" and a symbol of India's commitment under its Neighborhood First policy and MAHASAGAR vision. Mr. Kinjarapu Ram Mohan Naidu, Civil Aviation Minister of the Government of India, attended the inauguration alongside senior officials from both countries.
During his visit, Minister Naidu met with Dr. Abdulla Khaleel, Foreign Minister of the Government of Maldives, to discuss strengthening bilateral relations and exploring opportunities to deepen cooperation, enhance connectivity, and advance mutually beneficial development initiatives. The facility is expected to significantly boost tourism in the northern atolls and contribute to broader social and economic development in the region.
