Bhutan Completes Trial Transshipment via Bangladesh
1 December 2025
Bhutan has successfully completed its first trial transshipment of cargo through Bangladesh's road network and seaports, on 1 December 2025, operationalizing the “Agreement on the Movement of Traffic-in-Transit between the People's Republic of Bangladesh and the Royal Government of Bhutan,” signed on 22 March 2023, followed by a protocol to implement the agreement.
The pilot consignment originated from Bangkok, Thailand, and was managed by Bhutanese importer Abit Trading, consisted of six types of consumer goods including fruit juice, jelly, dried fruits, litchi-flavoured candy, and shampoo. It arrived at Bangladesh’s Chattogram port on 22 September 2025, after being shipped from Thailand's Laem Chabang port, and was transported by road to Bangladesh’s Burimari Land Port on 28 November. The consignment was allowed to cross into Indian territory via the Changrabandha land port on 1 December 2025, upon receiving port clearance, and reached Phuentsholing, Bhutan, within three hours.
The protocol agreement signed between Bangladesh and Bhutan enables Bhutan to utilize Bangladesh's seaports and road infrastructure for international trade. The pilot transshipment consignment opens a new trade corridor that reduces logistics costs and transit times for landlocked Bhutan while strengthening connectivity across the subregion.
