Bangladesh and Maldives Pledge to Deepen Cooperation in Key Sectors
5 October 2025

The Governments of Bangladesh and Maldives have committed to further strengthen their longstanding friendship and deepen cooperation across key sectors, including trade and healthcare. Diplomatic relations between Bangladesh and Maldives started in 1974; they reaffirmed their commitment during the presentation of the Letter of Credence of Dr. Md Nazmul Islam, Bangladesh’s newly appointed High Commissioner to Maldives, to Maldives President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu on 5 October 2025.
President Muizzu also thanked Bangladesh for its continued support in key sectors and highlighted the contribution of Bangladeshi migrant workers to Maldives' economy. They reaffirmed their commitment to increasing trade and business collaboration, particularly in transshipment through Maldivian ports, and exploring new partnerships in areas including agriculture. Their discussion highlighted shared commitment to regional cooperation and people-to-people connectivity.
Dr. Islam also conveyed the greetings of Bangladesh’s Chief Adviser, Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus, and extended an invitation to President Muizzu to visit Bangladesh at his convenience.
