Bhutan to Launch Sustainable and Smart Gelephu Integrated Check Post

17 June 2025

The new Gelephu Integrated Check Post (ICP) in Bhutan, which will play a key role in the Gelephu Mindfulness City project, is on track for its formal opening. The 25-foot structure built using steel and wood-plastic composite materials features smart technology and sustainable design.

The new ICP is packed with features aimed at streamlining both travel and trade, including:

  • Separate entry and exit lanes for better traffic flow
  • Eight E-gates and two manual gates for efficient immigration processing
  • Advanced security: airport-style metal detectors, X-ray scanners, extensive CCTV network
  • Facilities such as a frisking room, detention room, server room, and currency exchange counter
  • Motorized gates for large freight vehicles
  • Amenities, such as cafeteria, vending machines, clean toilets
  • Centralized operations for immigration, police, and other agencies

Gelephu ICP aims to significantly improve trade and the movement of goods by making import and export processes faster and more efficient. Essential documentation can be processed swiftly, and the passage for trucks will be smoother, providing a substantial boost for businesses operating in the region. By consolidating all major services within the compound, the ICP also enhances inter-agency coordination and operational efficiency.
