Thailand and Sri Lanka Accelerate Free Trade Agreement Implementation
11 April 2025

Thailand and Sri Lanka aim to expedite the implementation of the Thailand-Sri Lanka Free Trade Agreement (FTA), signed on 3 February 2024. The FTA aims to enhance trade, investment, and tourism and deepen their longstanding economic relationship. The agreement covers a broad range of areas, including trade in goods, services, investment, customs procedures, technical barriers, and intellectual property, and is seen as a strategic move for both nations to diversify their export markets and attract global investment.
During discussions in Colombo in March 2025, Thai Deputy Minister of Commerce Suchat Chomklin underscored Thailand’s proactive FTA strategy, while representatives from the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce expressed optimism that the FTA would lower trade barriers and benefit key exports such as tea, coconut, spices, and minerals through tariff exemptions. Sri Lanka is also seeking technical assistance from Thailand in agriculture, finance, and SME development.
The FTA is also expected to foster bilateral tourism and cultural exchanges. Expediting the FTA’s enforcement will further promote mutual economic benefits and greater integration into regional and global value chains.
