Jogighopa Inland Water Transport Terminal Inaugurated

18 February 2025

The inauguration of the Jogighopa inland water transport terminal on the Brahmaputra River (National Waterways 2) marks a significant step in India's Act East policy, aiming to strengthen trade and relations with Bhutan and Bangladesh. The launch event flagged off two vessels carrying stone chips and coal to Bangladesh. It was attended by ministers and officials from India and Bhutan, including Lyonpo Namgyal Dorji, Bhutan Minister of Industries, Commerce and Employment.

The strategically located terminal facilitates waterway access to Bangladesh and Bhutan within a 100km radius, while also connecting to Guwahati, and is equipped with modern infrastructure including an RCC jetty, cargo handling cranes, administrative and customs facilities, and ample storage space. This development is expected to act as an economic multiplier for the region, boosting trilateral trade and enhancing connectivity.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation for this terminal in 2021, and its operationalization underscores India's commitment to establishing itself as a vital waterway gateway in South Asia. By fostering regional projects and agreements with neighboring countries, India aims to promote seamless transport connectivity and contribute to the economic integration of the region.
