Bangladesh to Import 9,000 Megawatts of Electricity

Mr. Nasrul Hamid, State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources of the Government of Bangladesh, has requested the Asian Development Bank (ADB) to fix "actual" energy prices and establish a power market. Setting up a power market is needed for buying and selling electricity. Mr. Hamid met with Mr. Takeo Konishi, director general, ADB South Asia Department, and Mr. Edimon Ginting, ADB country director for Bangladesh.

The Government of Bangladesh is planning to import 9,000 megawatts of electricity. The country also intends to export electricity to Nepal and Bhutan in the winter.

ADB has backed seven energy projects worth $2.57 billion. ADB has also approved in 2023 two new projects worth around $360 million.
