New Akhaura-Agartala Railway Link to Reduce Travel Time, Spur Commerce

9 November 2023

Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and India Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Akhaura-Agartala railway link during an online ceremony held virtually held on 1 November 2023. The rail link connects Bangladesh and the northeastern region of India through Tripura.

"Through this link," Prime Minister Modi said, "states of northeast India can also be connected to the ports of Bangladesh." Prime Minister Hasina said the project would energize commerce in the surrounding communities.

The rail link is comprised of a 6.78-kilometer dual-gauge rail line in Bangladesh and 5.46 kilometer line in Tripura in India. It will reduce travel time between India's northeast and Kolkata. It will help spur international trade by improving India's access to the Port of Chattogram in Bangladesh.
