Bangladesh Inaugurates SASEC Chattogram-Cox's Bazar Rail

11 November 2023

Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina inaugurated the South Asia Subregional Economic Cooperation (SASEC) Chattogram-Cox's Bazar Railway Project on 11 November 2023. The 102 kilometer dual-gauge, single-line railway incorporates climate-resilient and biodiversity-friendly features and connects the southernmost part of Bangladesh with the rest of the country. The railway project is supported by the Asian Development Bank and is part of the trans-Asia railway network.

Prime Minister Hasina traveled from Cox's Bazar railway station to Ramu station after the inauguration ceremony. The rail line allows for fast train service between Chattogram (formerly known as Chittagong) and Cox's Bazar.

The railway connects Chattogram with Cox's Bazar and has nine stations at Satkania, Lohagara, Chokoria, Dulahazra, Eidgao, Ramu, Cox's Bazar Sadar, Ukhiya, and Gumdum. It will connect to the Matarbari deep sea port once the port's construction is completed.
