Five Mega Rail Projects to Expand India’s Rail Connectivity to Bangladesh and Nepal

India’s Ministry of Railways is working on five mega rail projects that will make adjacent borders along Nepal and Bangladesh and certain areas between Bangladesh and Nepal accessible by rail. These rail line projects are as follows: Balurghat (India)–Hili (Bangladesh), a new line in West Bengal and bordering with Bangladesh; Jogbani (India)–Bratnagar (Nepal), Agartala (India)–Akhaura (Bangladesh), Mahisasan (India-Zero point, Bangladesh) and the Jainagar (India)–Bijalpura (Nepal), including an extension from Bijalpura–Bardibas (Nepal).

Mr. Ashwini Vaishnaw, Railway Minister of India, shared in written to the Rajya Sabha, that five new rail line projects with a total distance of 125 km are being implemented. Of this, 60 km rail route length has already been commissioned until March 2023.

He also noted that the Agartala–Akhaura broad gauge project is set to provide additional connectivity between India and Bangladesh and encourage trade between two nations.
