27 October 2022

The Bangladesh Roads and Highways Department signed a contract for road expansion work under the South Asia Subregional Economic Cooperation (SASEC) Dhaka-Sylhet Corridor Road Development Project. The signing was done on 10 October 2022 in Dhaka. The project will expand the national highway from two to six lanes, including two separate lanes for slow-moving vehicles.

The road expansion project will reduce traffic congestion and vehicular accidents and is set to be completed in December 2026. It will cost BDT16,918.5881 crore (approximately $1.676 billion), of which BDT13,244.6895 crore ($1.308 billion) will be financed by a loan from the Asian Development Bank.

Package one (out of six packages) covers the construction of 35 kilometers of the highway in Narayanganj and Narsingdi districts and will be done in two parts. The first part of the construction will be on an 18-kilometer stretch from the Kanchpur crossing to the Chhanpara bus stand along the Dhaka-Sylhet national highway. It will be undertaken by a joint venture between Longjian Road and Bridge Company Ltd. of China and Max Infrastructure Ltd. of Bangladesh.

The second part of the construction will be on a 17-kilometer stretch from the Chhanpara bus stand to the Narsingdi BSCIC area. Road work will be undertaken by a joint venture between Zhengzhou City Highway Engineering Corporation Ltd. of China and Max Infrastructure Ltd.

The SASEC corridor project will improve road connectivity within Bangladesh and between Bangladesh and neighboring countries. It is part of the Asian Highway, the Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation corridor, and the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation corridors.
