India, Maldives Discuss Energy Cooperation

Mr. R. K. Singh, Minister for Power and New and Renewable Energy of the Government of India, and Ms. Aminath Shauna, Minister of Environment, Climate Change and Technology of the Government held discussions on establishing transmission interconnection for renewable power transfer. The meeting was held in New Delhi, India.

Maldives aims to achieve net zero emission target by 2030. The meeting proposed signing two MoUs: (i) energy cooperation, and (ii) transmission interconnection under One Sun, One World, One Grid.

According to the news release, a draft agreement is being prepared for the MoU on transmission interconnection. A technical team from India would visit Maldives to assess its technical feasibility. Both countries would jointly prepare the detailed project report (DPR), which will include an undersea cable route survey and network augmentation in Malé, Maldives.
