Maldives and India Undertake the Greater Male Connectivity Project

26 August 2021

The Governments of India and Maldives held a signing ceremony for the Greater Male Connectivity Project (GMCP) on 26 August 2021, with Afcons Infrastructure Limited (AFCONS) undertaking the project. India will provide around $400 million line of credit and a grant of $100 million. The GMCP construction will build a 6.74 km bridge and causeway link connecting Male with the adjoining islands of Villingli, Gulhifalhu and Thilafushi. It is the biggest infrastructure project in Maldives that is set to link Maldives’ four islands and connect people, businesses, and industry.

Maldives Foreign Minister Abdulla Shahid noted that the GMCP is a flagship project of Maldives President Solih, and will be an enduring symbol of India-Maldives partnership.

India’s envoy to Maldives Ambassador Sunjay Sudhir underscored that the GMCP supports the vision of strong bilateral relations for India and Maldives. It is concrete proof that India is a robust development partner of the Maldives, in addition to being the First Responder in times of any emergency.
