18 August 2021

The Royal Monetary Authority of the Government of Bhutan launched www.bhutanmade.bt. This website is an e-commerce portal that promotes “Made in Bhutan” products and makes it accessible to the international market.

The website is an initiative of the RMA in collaboration with the Ministry of Economic Affairs (MoEA) and the Bank of Bhutan (BoB). It aims to nurture Bhutan’s entrepreneurial culture through innovative technologies. Mr. Dasho Penjore, RMA Governor, emphasized the importance of having a showroom for Bhutan's small and cottage industry products. The website offers 155 Bhutanese products from nine merchants, and will gradually add more.

The RMA press release acknowledged that e-commerce had transformed and redefined the traditional way of doing business across the globe. The COVID-19 pandemic has further underscored its importance.

The RMA also noted that stated that smart application of e-commerce technologies would help Bhutan overcome the barriers and challenges of economies of scale and the geography to integrate with the global market.

Prior to launching the site, stakeholders have worked on an e-commerce policy and regulatory frameworks, product certification and standardization, and logistics to foster trust among the portal’s consumers and businesses.
