Energy Connectivity, Trade to be Game Changer for India

20 November 2022

Mr. Harsh Vardhan Shringla, chief coordinator of G20 Presidency of India, highlighted the importance of energy connectivity and increasing regional trade at the two-day “Celebrating Contribution of India’s North East Region (NER) in Nation Building" conclave, held in Guwahati, India, on 20–21 November 2022.

Noting that energy connectivity can be a game changer for the country, he underscored the new cross-border energy trading policy, which will allow power to be traded between Bangladesh, Bhutan, Nepal, and India through corridors in India and Bangladesh.

Mr. Shringla also emphasized the need to decongest the power transmission lines passing through the Siliguri corridor. He noted that the transmission lines could be routed via Bangladesh, in accordance with a multilateral pact. Power could supply both India’s northeastern region and Bangladesh.

He also promoted the country’s cross-border trade with its neighbors, which will ensure a bigger, direct market for the northeast region.
