Bhutan, India Discuss Future of Energy Cooperation

Bhutan’s Minister for Economic Affairs Loknath Sharma was in New Delhi, India, on 18–21 July 2022. He met with ministers from relevant agencies, facilitated by India’s Ministry for Foreign Affairs. The meeting focused on hydropower cooperation between the two countries and its future. The energy situation in both countries, market factors, and modalities of cooperation, were also discussed, according to a report by Kuensel. Mr. Sharma noted that the power secretary of the Government of India is expected to visit Bhutan to hold further discussions at the secretary level.

The meeting in New Delhi also agreed to work toward the closure of the Kholongchhu Hydroelectric Project Limited joint venture company. Bhutan and India will initiate a discussion on the way forward for the project. The decision will be conveyed by Bhutan and India to the Druk Green Power Corporation and the Satluj Jal Vidyut Nigam Limited, respectively.
