New Border Haat to be Built in Tripura

7 June 2017

A team represented by government officials from India and Bangladesh has selected Kamalpur, Dhalai district, India, as the site for a new border "haat" (rural market). The Border Haat Management Committee held its first meeting on 6 June and finalized the lineup of vendors and items to be sold.

There are currently two border haats in Tripura: one in Kamalasagar in Sepahijala district and another at Srinagar in South Tripura district.

A site has also been selected for another border haat to be built in Raghna in North Tripura district.

Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and then India Prime Minister Manmohan Singh agreed to establish border haats allowing trade in specific products in 2010 during their meeting in New Delhi in January 2010.
