Asian Highway Section to be Operational in 2016

26 July 2015

The Asian Highway – and part of the India-Myanmar-Thailand (IMT) Trilateral Highway – will connect Moreh in India to Mae Sot in Thailand, via Mandalay and Yangon in Myanmar. The road will be linked further to Cambodia, Laos, and Vietnam. The IMT Motor Vehicles Agreement (MVA) will help seamless movement of cargo and passenger across borders, including private vehicles.

The Meeting of IMT Transport Secretaries was held in Bangkok, Thailand last 13-14 July 2015 to prepare the implementing protocols for inclusion in the final draft of IMT MVA. The IMT MVA is scheduled to be signed during a transport ministers meeting of the three countries in Myanmar in November 2015 and expected to be operational in 2016.

The IMT road corridor is one of the highways of the Trans-Asian Highway network that extends from Tokyo in the east, Turkey in the west, Russia in the north, and Indonesia in the south. It passes through 32 member countries of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific.
