India-Sri Lanka to Establish New Ferry Route between Rameswaram and Talaimannar

India and Sri Lanka are in talks to establish a ferry route between Rameswaram and Talaimannar. At the bilateral meeting in Mumbai during the India Maritime Week 2025, Mr. Sarbananda Sonowal, India’s Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, met with Mr. Anura Karunathilaka, Sri Lanka Minister of Ports and Civil Aviation, to discuss the creation of the new route and the expansion of current ferry services.

The new route is projected to complement ferry operations between Nagapattinam, India, and Kankesanthurai, Sri Lanka. The talks strengthen ties between India and Sri Lanka and improves maritime cooperation in the region.

India Maritime Week 2025, hosted by the Indian Ministry of Ports, was held on October 27 to 31.
