Seventh Meeting of India-Nepal Oversight Mechanism Held

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Government of Nepal organized the Seventh Meeting of the Nepal-India Oversight Mechanism in Kathmandu, Nepal on 9 July 2019 to review progress of projects under bilateral cooperation.

The delegations from India and Nepal reviewed the status of implementation of India-funded projects in Nepal, including cross-border railway, petroleum pipelines, roads, integrated check posts, bridges, energy, irrigation, inundation, agriculture, and post-earthquake reconstruction.

The officials expressed satisfaction in the progress of the projects, according to a news report.

The statement released by the Foreign Affairs Ministry highlighted that the delegations agreed to address problems and obstacles in the ongoing projects to ensure smooth implementation. Works will also be expedited to facilitate early completion.

The meeting was co-chaired by Mr. Shanker Das Bairagi, Foreign Secretary, of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Government of Nepal, and Mr. Manjeev Singh Puri, Ambassador of India to Nepal.

The Sixth Meeting of the Nepal-India Oversight Mechanism held in July 2018 also discussed ongoing bilateral projects, including the Terai roads project and the Arun-III hydropower project.

According to recent news, works on the Arun-III hydropower project have been completed by 22%. This export-based hydropower project with around $1.2 billion investment from India aims to generate 400 million units of power annually.
