Sri Lanka’s New National Port Master Plan Emphasizes Boosting Efficiency and Infrastructure
21 June 2019
The new national port master plan developed for the Government of Sri Lanka urged Colombo Port to boost its efficiency and fast track its infrastructure development to keep the port competitive, and the ‘choice’ port and shipping destination in the region.
According to the plan, initiatives in digitization, trade facilitation, and customs procedures can better the container logistics chain by improving administration and procedures. These should be complemented with upgrades and/or development of infrastructure in port and hinterland connections.
The plan is financed by the Japan Fund for Poverty Reduction under the Sri Lanka: National Port Master Plan technical assistance, signed in September 2016, administered by the Asian Development Bank. The Maritime and Transport Business Solutions and NIRAS A/S, a Scandinavian consulting company, drafted the plan.
Once the Master Plan is implemented, the plan will contribute toward a harmonized and balanced port development. Increasing port efficiency will also contribute in implementing Sri Lanka’s national export strategy, and help improve logistics for import.
The technical assistance is also funding the technical review of the final design of the port access elevated highway.
